Potato Famine

With "A Modest Proposal" Jonathan swift has many different opinions. He does not feel to bad about the people living on the streets because they would not stand up for themselves. Jonathan was protestant but was born in Dublin,Ireland and considered himself a native. The potato famine was caused by a fungus that came from mexico. As a result 750,00 Irish died within 10 years.

Benifits

Some people might believe that the things Jonathan proposes are outrageous but they could benifit some people. These people would be the lower class.

The speaker and The Audience

In The Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift speaks as the narrator. He discusses his own opinion through out the story and what he sees. He often used the world propose and i would imagine that would make him the proposer. Now you the reader would be the audience. You are listening to what he has to say and placing your own opinion on it.

Satire? - Dana M.

Satire is pretty much sarcasm for literature. The auther won't beat around the bush and just make fun of a fault or imperfection based on their opinion. Now as for "A Modest Proposal" being a satire, I believe it is. Johnathan Swift suggests that because the low class will not stand up for themselves that children the age of 1 year they are eaten. Now this is a very crude suggestion that many readers may believe that they are outrageous but it is all to get his point across.
